Shongololo Express accepted the invitation to be part of my project and offered me a trip from Johannesburg to Windhoek. Shongololo Express is very different from The Blue Train and Rovos Rail. Those are luxurious all-inclusive trains, while Shongololo is an adventure train on half-board basis without drinks.
Shongololo Express charges the same for a two week trip as Rovos Rail charges for a 2-day trip and you experience something every day. Daily guided tours are what makes Shongololo special. The comfort and service are far from The Blue Train and Rovos Rail. The rooms are basic and far from Rovos Rail standards. The train is very old (from 1952) and not in the best condition. I had big problems with dust onboard, but that was my only problem in an otherwise great experience. Only a few other passengers experienced the same problem with dust as I did, so while its something to be aware of, it is not something to stop you from going if you love adventure travel. It is a unique concept, and I highly doubt you will experience more on any other train journey in the world.
I thank Shongololo Express for being part of my journey. Visit www.shongololo.com for more information.
