Grasmere Lodge is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and surely one of the best in New Zealand. Great hotels are my passion and in order to experience Grasmere I was on quite a challenge. The 120 kilometres distance from Christchurch, with a 200 dollar taxi as the only option, made hitchhiking an easy decision. New Zealand is said to be one of the easiest places in the world to hitchhike, but I decided to start early to make sure I would reach in time.
These events took place in late 2011 and way before I started this project. I hitchhiked from the amazing Otahuna Lodge and 6 cars and 3 hours later I was at Grasmere Lodge. Hitchhking is indeed very easy in New Zealand and safe as well. Many do it and I highly recommend it. It’s a great way to keep cost down and experience the local culture. After this long hitchhiking experience, I also hitchhiked the following days in New Zealand. I even skipped the bus back from Wanaka to Queenstown Airport, because I knew I could easily get a ride. I was only standing on the side of the road for 10 seconds before the first car stopped. He took me all the way to the airport and I have experienced this kindness, many times, hitchhiking around the world. Many of the local people around the world have great stories including this guy. His wife is an actress and were part of the first Hobbit film, which came out last year.
Grasmere Lodge is a wonderful experience, set in extraordinary surroundings. Just take a look at my photos below.
