The Best Travel Apps

Apps make my life on the road a lot easier. Below are some of my favourite travel apps that can help all travellers. Google Maps is the most helpful, but there are many other apps to make your trip a lot easier.

F-Secure Freedome VPN – Android – App Store
A private VPN is very important when travelling the world. Social media sites and calling apps are blocked in many countries, but with a VPN you can unblock it. Freedome is the best I’ve used. You can get 4 months for free with the code “w9f4ct”.

SidekickAndroidApp Store
More a blogger/business-app. Tired of waiting for a reply? Send your email via Sidekick and check if your email has been seen.

AwardWallet – AndroidApp Store
AwardWallet keeps track of your loyalty programs, such as your frequent flyer miles, hotel and credit card points. This application gives you access to your accounts and travel plans even when you don’t have internet access. Use the code “free-iavkoy” for a free upgrade for first time users.

Uber – AndroidApp Store
A fantastic and more comfortable alternative to taxis. Request a ride using the app and get picked up within minutes. On-demand service means no reservations required.

Speedtest.netAndroidApp Store
The best speed test app on the market and great for travelling. Quickly check the speed of your connection.

Kindle – AndroidApp Store
With an Amazon account and this app, you can read books directly on your smartphone.

NextplusAndroidApp Store
One of the best free calling apps. Watch videos, earn free calling credit to call any country in the world. Fantastic for travellers on a budget in 3rd world countries.

Freetone – Android – App Store
Same concept as Nextplus.

WifiMapperAndroidApp Store
Wi-Fi is one of the few things I need to travel the world. Like most people, I would rather walk until I find free Wi-Fi than paying for it. WifiMapper is a new app that makes my free Wi-Fi mission a lot easier around the world. Download the app, allow it to use your location and it will show you the way to the nearest free Wi-Fi hotspot.

There are more than 2 million hotspots around the world, even in places like Bangui and Nuuk making it one of the must-have apps for world travellers.

YelpAndroid App Store
Yelp is a great location-based app to find places nearby to eat, shop, drink, relax, and play.
