Ubud Hanging Gardens by Orient-Express

Ubud Hanging Gardens is Orient-Express second property in Bali and after my wonderful stay in Jimbaran Puri last year I was excited to see the level of this property.

I arrived at noon and the hotel was very busy so I didn’t receive the welcome I hoped for. The lobby is very small and I was escorted to their lounge area. The lobby is open, but I found it very unacceptable that smoking was allowed. Passive smoke is one of the biggest world problems in 2011 and I hate hotels that haven’t realized that.

Nobody smoked in the lounge area and I received a very nice welcome drink and a towel. After 20 minutes the room was ready and I was excited to see their pool villas after the photos I saw on the internet.

The pool villa had a typical Orient-Express design and with both indoor and outdoor bathtub. The best thing is the view. A private pool and the beautiful scenary of Ubud. Stunning. The internet is complimentary, but the wireless didn’t work from villa 41 so a cable was provided instead. The speed was acceptable, but internet is something they definitely can improve.

The spa has very beautiful views and while I didn’t have a treatment I’m sure it’s a great little experience.

Ubud Hanging Gardens is very hard to compare difficult to compare with Jimbaran Puri which is more like a beach resort. The service at both places is really great, but I found Jimbaran Puri a bit more relaxing and a little better overall experience in terms of the wonderful villa I had.

The breakfast was not very impressive. I believe a hotel of this size should do a great ala carte breakfast, instead there is a smaller buffet which I didn’t find very inviting. I didn’t have any further food in the hotel as it in my opinion was overpriced. More than double of Villa Mathis and Bali Pavillions which both is Relais&Chateaux and therefore very strong on that point.

Overall I was very satisfied with the experience in Ubud Hanging Gardens. As many most hotels there was things I didn’t like about it, but my overall experience was great and I can highly recommend it. Their rack rate is definitely not the best value in Bali, but Hanging Gardens often have promotions though different travel agents and it’s well worth to look for.

My opinion: Great experience.
